There’s a strange trend that is picking up on Facebook and Twitter and not many realize that they are actually part of the trend. Not paranormal kind of strange but I call it strange because I don’t understand why it happens on a medium that is meant for people to socialize in.
Social Parties And Networking Events
When you check the Facebook updates of your friends or the Twitter updates of people that you follow, you might not realize that people are talking about stuffs that they might not do so otherwise in real life. I’m not referring to intimate messages either.
I tend to think of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as a place to… socialise. That’s it. A big place where everyone meets to network and socialize. A big social party or networking event, you might say.
The Strangest Things People Say
So, why is it that people are saying stuffs that they don’t normally say in real life? To understand what I mean, look at the following sentences and imagine yourself saying it to someone you meet at a social party or networking event.
These are real updates that I copied directly from Facebook and Twitter and pasted it exactly as it is. In italics are what people actually said. In brackets are what I am thinking to myself when I see it.
- why do i dread it so much. D: (What is it that you dread?)
- ohmygod….i dont feel very good bout tomorrow… (Why? What’s wrong with tomorrow?)
- It’s not whether u get knocked down,it’s whether u get up again– Vince Lombardi (Seriously, you go around giving quotes?)
- Alright. Very good day. I love peter. Goodnight. (Who is peter in our conversation?)
- you tryin to eat the box !!! (Box? What box?)
- Maaan these kids live in filth, I can’t believe their mother let them stay in this environment. (Who are you talking about and why?)
Proof That It Works?
Now do you realize how strange those words are. The thing is, this is the kind of stuffs that people share on Facebook and Twitter all the time. Why do they do that? How do you socialize by saying things like that?
Some may dispute me by saying that it does create a conversation. Okay, I can see that happening by the number of comments or replies that it gets. It also creates attention judging by the number of likes and retweets. I don’t dispute that and I respect your opinion.
Socialize Everyone, Socialize!
Don’t get me wrong here. I’m not against it. Only that I find it strange. In my humblest of opinion, you should update Facebook or Twitter with messages and the thought that you are actually in front of someone and saying it to them. That makes it more human.
Not only saying things to let it off your chest but with the actual intention of creating a conversation. Don’t you actually do that when you get to meet someone for the first time or you are in a group party and you want everyone to start participating in the conversation?
It’s okay when you have something nice to share with everyone. It’s like saying, “Have you heard about …?”. Then again, how do you socialize by saying, “I hate you!” out of nowhere. Are we losing the human touch in socializing and networking too?
